Welcome to the Gyre Empire

The Gyre Empire, a multi-disciplinary art project, uses humor to raise awareness about the floating plastic “continent” known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I am conceptually colonizing a new territory by representing fictitious nation building and marketing mock plastic real estate developments in the gyre, all with an ocean view.

Beth Grossman’s art and participatory performances focus attention on our place in nature, history and public participation. These creative situations aim to question common social beliefs, raise awareness, build community and encourage civic engagement. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has collaborated internationally with communities, universities, corporations, non-profits, and museums.
