New EPA documents reveal even deeper proposed cuts to staff and programs

How exactly would the 31% budget cut to the US Environmental Protection Agency proposed by President Trump’s Office of Management and Budget be realized? Which programs would see reductions, which would stay, and which would be eliminated entirely? The Washington Post obtained an EPA budget document that laid out the proposed reductions in detail.

Though the EPA’s acting chief financial officer David A. Bloom framed the cuts as an effort for the agency to “center on our core legal requirements” many environmental, social justice, and public health advocates are wary about a plan they see as a path to the lax regulation companies have been seeking.

The budget proposal will likely be reworked by congressional lawmakers, yet provides a troubling indicator of the Trump administration’s intent to roll back the agency at the cost of programs many consider critical to protecting the health of people and the environment.
