Australian rock art, reaching far back into the stone age, is vanishing at an unprecedented rate due to aerial fire-bombing and burn-off. The red thread of human history is being charred for trivial reasons, and some of the best art may be irreplaceable in coming from an earlier kind of human. Aborigines ascribe it to gwion-gwion – the quin-quin or quinkan – at the heart of a vast maritime commonwealth.
