Ideas for Action

Promoting research-based use of wild edible plants

The use of wild edible plants (often edible weeds) is a promising way to promote health and longevity in a good life, good environment, and sustainable development. I have studied the latest research (2016 – 2020) on wild edible plants. I have published books on this theme. I found 94 species, which have 1) a long history of use, 2) globally an extensive distribution, and 3) experimental research according to which these species are safe to consume. Many wild edible plants are also used for healing diseases (phytotherapy). The empirical research evidence is that they promote health and prevent degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
The UN Decade on Biodiversity (2011 – 2020) is ending. In my mind, the UN Decade on Wild Edible Plants (2021 – 2030) would be a great idea worth promoting.
