Is the idea of science as a public good being lost?

Steve Kolowich interviews Virginia Tech civil-engineering professor Marc Edwards who has been a critical part of exposing lead contamination in the Washington, D.C. water supply back in 2003, and more recently in Flint, Michigan’s water supply. Edwards expresses frustration and sorrow that the current academic system does not support scientists in taking on such questions and actions.
