Dominique Mosbergen reports on the recent surge in the global certified seafood market shown in the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s review Standards and the Blue Economy.

Sustainable seafood now accounts for 14 percent of global seafood production, the report said. That’s a whopping leap from a decade ago, when only 0.5 percent of seafood production was considered sustainable.

Certification programs, increased awareness of environmental and social exploitation, and greater consumer interest in seafood sources have all contributed to the increased market share.

But what do these standards actually mean for management of the many global fisheries already fully or over-exploited? Which species and fishers are involved, and which are being left behind?
