Methane expands 170 times the volume of the original hydrate.   According to the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program from Oslo, Norway,  just the East Siberian Arctic Shelf contains 800 Giga Tons of methane. They say if 1% of the methane stored there comes up, it will triple the amount of methane in the atmosphere. Abrupt climate change may be the result.   Conventional wisdom has been that methane hydrates and permafrost had to melt to release methane. Not necessarily so.  If the ice is heated just enough to damage it’s integrity, methane appears to seep through it. This may help to explain why Antarctica is showing methane readings as high as the Arctic. The Himalayan Plateau is showing similar results.
